Volkswagen's foray into the Pickup market will be with their AMAROK model, initially available as a 4 door double cab, with a single cab version becoming available later in 2011.
VW will be manufacturing the vehicle in their South American plant in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which explains their launch in the Southern Hemisphere in the early part of 2010. It is expected to be launched in key markets in South America, Australia and South Africa first, eventually coming to Europe in the summer of 2011. Early indications are that the truck will be available from mid 2011.
The Amarok will be available in a six speed manual transmission version: drive train will be via a switchable or permanant 4MOTION all wheel drive.
There will be a choice of two power plants under the bonnet. These will offer a 2.0 litre Euro5 compliant common rail TDI engine capable of producing 163PS or a 122PS version which will give 340Nm of torque at 2000 revs
Features of the Amarok include class beating load dimensions - the maximum width is 1620mm (although this narrows to 1222mm between the wheel arches), and a maximum load length of 1555mm. This means that a standard Euro pallet can be fitted into the loadbed sideways.
The Amarok pickup truck features some clever driver aids as well as good looks. The Amarok has an 'off road' ABS which works more slowly than the normal ABS, allowing the truck to build up a small wedge of gravel or loose pebbles, giving the driver more control without sliding about.
In addition the Amarok has Hill Hold Assist to ensure you don't roll backwards when ascending your local mountain and Hill Descent Assist which allows you to go down steep slopes with the minimum of fuss.
