Pickup Truck owners double use of Winter Tyres

Despite the vast majority of Britain seeing higher temperatures than this time last year, tyre manufacturer, Michelin, has seen a doubling of sales of its cold weather tyre sales - up to 500,000 compared to the 250,000 sold in 2010.

In spite of this increase, pickup truck owners and other motorists who bought 'winter' tyres only represent around 2% of total UK tyre sales - much lower than most other European countries.

Sales of winter tyres have rocketed by 50 per cent for one manufacturer in the UK, despite the British winter failing to live up to some dreadful weather forecasts.

Many sources in the media had predicated that the UK was to face one of the harshest winters in 30 years, but this had failed to materialize by the end of January 2012 for the bulk of the country.

Despite their name, winter tyres should not be seen as needing to be confined to icy and snowy conditions. Their compound composition means they outperform summer tyres in both wet and dry conditions when the temperature drops below 7 degrees centigrade.
