Can you believe the Toyota Hilux has been on sale for nearly 50 years? It's sold over 18 million since its 1968 launch thanks to its durability – sales in locations where the roads and weather conspire to cause terrible driving conditions are notable high – and it's widely regarded as a peak of tough, reliable pickup design. Pickup Trucks Direct Content Editor Tom Roberts reports.
1) It boasts car-like comfort
Let's be clear, the Hilux is an icon of toughness, but that doesn't mean it's not a comfortable vehicle to drive. Quite the opposite. Pickups Truck Direct customers always tell us how they sometimes forget they're driving a pickup when in the Hilux's cab. The interior is also notably impressive, being described by Auto Express as "classier, more comfortable and nicer to drive than ever before", with ample space for 4 or 5 adults.
2) You won't want for load space
This is where pickup trucks prove their worth – load space and pulling weight – and the latest generation of Hilux is far larger than its predecessor, and almost 130mm wider. Single and double cab versions can both carry over 1,025kg, and tow at least 3,200kg. Those are some good stats, especially in an increasingly market sector of utility sector.
3) You'll benefit from competitive running costs
Single cab versions can reach a solid peak of 39.8mpg, while the double cab and extra versions mange just over 40mpg – yes, this might not be the detail that tips it for you, but it shows that you don't have to pay for that added reliability by compromising on efficiency – you get that too.
4) It is incredibly safe and reliable
Seven airbags! Seven. That's how many the new Hilux packs. And under the hood is ABS, Emergency Bake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, Trailer Sway Control, and an optional Safety Sense package.
And let's quickly touch on the engine – 2.4-litre diesel engine, relatively new with efficiency-boosting technology which is likely to mean the difference between medium-term and long-term reliability.
5) You can ford a river in it!
Just look at the picture above. Not much else to say, really. Although, I will say this: if you're looking for a pickup truck that is capable of fording a river, getting bashed about on tough terrain and is still able to drive to site the next day, you've found your answer in the Hilux.
