Worn brakes 'particularly hazardous in winter'

Mitsubishi L200 drivers may want to ensure they stay safe on the roads this year by having their brakes checked.

Head of AA Rescue Noel Keogh warned motorists that icy streets can be particularly hazardous if cars and vans are not in the best condition.

"Brake components that are badly worn may not provide the level of control needed for safe winter driving," he commented.

Last year, AA Patrols found more than 600 members vehicles had brake problems, with worn pads revealed as the single most common fault detected by servicing technicians.

Signs there may be problems include scraping, chirping or squeaking noises, while a brake pedal that appears to require more pressure than normal to stop the vehicle can also indicate its time for an upgrade.

The AA recently provided tips on driving along flooded stretches of road, which included testing brakes as soon as a car exits the deep water.
