Winter tyres 'will not invalidate insurance'

Those considering fitting winter tyres to their Mitsubishi L200 pickups may be pleased to hear this modification will not invalidate insurance policies.

This is according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), which represents 90 per cent of the motoring market.

Provided the new tyres meet with the vehicle manufacturer's specifications and are in a roadworthy condition, their use should not result in any additional charges being added to a premium.

Director-general of General Insurance Nick Starling commented how last year some motorists were unsure of the financial implications of fitting such tyres.

He added: "Insurers do not want to penalise motorists who take steps, like fitting winter tyres, to improve their safety on dangerous winter roads."

The ABI explained this reassurance applies to vehicles used for private and personal use.

Peter Harrison from MoneySupermarket.com recently claimed investing in a winter breakdown policy is essential as the shorter days and bad weather sets in.
