Winter tyres may be something Toyota Hilux drivers want to consider investing in after it was claimed they have "huge safety benefits".
According to What Car? magazine, motorists should trade in their summer wheels when the weather turns colder as they are not equipped for poor road conditions.
Research revealed that in snow, cars with fair-weather tyres took more than twice the distance to stop than special winter versions.
What Car? editor-in-chief Chas Hallett said: "Winter tyres make for much safer winter driving, so we would encourage all motorists to change their tyres in the colder months."
Despite the findings, a minority of drivers bother to swap their wheels as the shorter daylight hours draw in, with 85 per cent choosing not to in 2010.
Company fleets were recently urged by mytyres.co.uk to consider investing in winter tyres so they can continue to operate during periods of ice and heavy snowfall.
