Wheel clamping on private land to be banned

Pickup truck leasing customers will soon be free from the threat of wheel clamping on private land.

The government has announced it will ban the practice in the private sector as part of its Freedom Bill to be introduced in November.

Once the Bill has been implemented anyone who clamps or otherwise immobilises a vehicle or tows it away on private land without specific legal authority to do so will face "tough penalties".

"For too long motorists have fallen victim to unscrupulous tactics by many clamping firms. Reports of motorists being marched to cash points or left stranded after their car has been towed are simply unacceptable," said home office minister Lynne Featherstone.

"A ban on clamping and towing on private land will end this abuse and companies who decide to flout new laws will face severe penalties."

Earlier this year, Philip Hammond, the new transport secretary, promised to "end the war on motorists".
