Vehicle dealers 'must carry out mileage checks'

Companies leasing used Ford Ranger pickups may be interested to hear about a new initiative being launched in a bid to combat the falsifying of car mileage reports.

Vehicle information company HPI is urging dealers to conduct thorough checks to ensure they do not unwittingly take part in selling a clocked car.

Daniel Burgess, managing director of the organisation, said: "A sound mileage investigation strategy ... is not only best practice, but can provide a sound legal defence for dealers and their business, offering more than just protection from clocking."

Using the National Mileage Register as well conducting a HPI Check, dealers can instantly see if there is a vehicle discrepancy.

This was recommended as by completing in-depth background assessments, organisations can protect their reputation and ensure they meet Office of Fair Trading guidelines.

Mileage recalibration is the process of changing the milometer to turn back the reading, so it appears a vehicle has travelled less distance.
