Unsafe tyre convictions on the rise

More motorists are being convicted for driving on unsafe or defective tyres, new figures obtained from the Ministry of Justice and the Home Office have revealed.
Toyota HiLux drivers may want to check their rubber to ensure it has the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6mm, as the data, gathered by TyreSafe, showed 10,475 drivers in England and Wales were successfully prosecuted for the offence last year.
The figure is 1,000 more than that recorded in 2009 and convictions are now at a four-year high.
Chairman of TyreSafe Stuart Jackson noted the authorities are taking "a robust stance" against those who do not ensure their vehicles are safe.
"If you drive on illegal tyres then be prepared to pay the price," he commented.
Switching to special tyres can be one way to improve safety in hazardous driving conditions and Steve Settle of Toyota recently revealed the firm is running a winter tyre programme to help drivers ensure their vehicle performs well in snowy or icy conditions.
