Underinvestment causes backlog in road maintenance

The Transport Committee has produced a new report on the 'Major Road Network' which it says shows a failure by virtually every Local Authority to tackle the problem of road maintenance, following years of underinvestment. The financial shortfall amounts to an average of some £7.5 million per authority.
In particular, the report critisised Local Authorities commitment to maintaining and repairing local A roads, and the Transport Committee highlighted the increasing level of reactive work, claiming this attitude to road maintenance was not cost effective.
There was also evidence that some local authorities spend less than half the money on maintainance that they received from Government.
The total cost of the backlog of work throughout the UK could cost up to £8.6 Billion
