Traffic sign overhaul announced

Plans have been announced to overhaul Britain's traffic signing system, news which may interest Isuzu Rodeo drivers.

The transport minister Norman Baker revealed the government's intention to significantly reduce the number of notices councils need to use by relaxing the rules.

It is hoped the move will limit unnecessary Whitehall bureaucracy and help local authorities lower their expenses.

Mr Baker said: "This is the most far-reaching review of traffic signs in 40 years. We are cutting pointless bureaucracy, giving councils more freedoms and updating our suite of signs for the modern era."

Fewer signs will be needed, with the intention of reducing roadside clutter and making directions less confusing for motorists.

However, a range of new pointers will be introduced such as those alerting drivers to electric vehicle charging points and estimated journey times for cyclists.

The amendments will come into force in November 2011 and should reduce the administrative burden on local authorities.
