The world record for quickest overland journey to the South Pole has been broken by vehicles based on a Toyota Hilux platform.
Guinness World Records has officially recognised that the trip by Arctic Trucks International is the fastest of all time to make the trek across Antarctica.
Emil Grimsson, executive chairman of the organisation, stated that the route is "extremely challenging".
"Our vehicles are operating at altitudes up to almost 3500m, in ultra-low temperatures and in very difficult snow conditions," he said.
Mr Grimsson explained that the vehicles used for the world record attempt were based on the Toyota Hilux 3.0-litre turbo diesel model.
In December 2010, when the trek took place, the two vans made it from Novolazarevskaya station to the South Pole in just four-and-a-half days.
Earlier this month, a report from Interbrand revealed that Toyota has retained its position as the world's top-rated automotive brand, thanks partly to the success of vehicles such as the Hilux.
