Toyota Hilux named pickup of the year

The Toyota Hilux pickup truck has walked away with the top honour at the Total 4x4 Awards.

Editor of Total 4x4 magazine Alan Kidd said: "Hilux has always stood out in what is a very fiercely fought category. It's incredibly capable in every area and comes at a very appealing price."

The current model available on the market is Toyota's sixth generation of the pickup and, according to Mr Kidd the "subtle" updates have helped "nudge" it back to the top spot.

He highlighted the modern interior, which complements the tough exterior of the vehicle as one of the improvements that gives the Hilux the edge.

The pickup is known for its ability to handle rugged and challenging terrain, having been the first car ever to make it to both the South and North Poles.

Elsewhere, the Subaru Forester was named 4x4 of the Year by the magazine at the award ceremony.
