Toyota Hilux drivers 'should check tyre pressures'

Drivers of Toyota Hilux pickup trucks may want to check the pressure of their vehicle's tyres, after new research from Kwik Fit revealed the majority of cars on UK roads are fitted with under-inflated rubber.

The study found that 68 per cent are being driven on tyres that are at least 3psi under the recommended inflation figure and chief executive of the company Ian Fraser warned not inflating tyres properly is both risky and expensive.

Not having enough air in tyres can lead to increased petrol consumption and Mr Fraser noted it is also "extremely dangerous" as it increases the chance of a blowout occurring.

"If your tyre won't hold its pressure, there could be a slow leak in the valve or a puncture," he remarked, adding it is possible to fill spare tyres with nitrogen rather than normal air, which will help them remain at the same pressure for longer periods.

Recommended pressures can generally be found in the owners' handbook and on a label affixed to the frame of the car.
