Speed cameras to be switched off?

As the new government starts to cut into road safety grants across the UK, many councils may turn off speed cameras as they decide the best way to reallocate their financial resources.

As part of its manifesto pledge, the new government had stated that it was to end the 'war on the motorist' and the cut in the grant funding has already caused some organisations such as Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership to announce closure of all its operations in Oxfordshire.

Mike Penning, the new junior transport minister, has put on record that the government would strongly encourage local authorities to find other ways of using road safety funding than just spending the money on speed cameras.
