Road sign improvements 'a must for safety'

Ford Ranger drivers may be interested in a new report that claims road signs and markings in the UK need to be upgraded in order to save lives.

A consultation document drawn up by European Road Assessment Programme (EuroRAP) and European New Car Assessment Programme, states that the current poor conditions of many signs could hinder technologies designed to read the road ahead.

John Dawson, chairman of EuroRAP, said: "Huge sums have been spent developing technology that is revolutionising the safety of our vehicles."

However, he noted that "little attention has been given to the quality of basic signing and marking", which means the in-car safety devices may be obsolete.

The new technology has been designed to use cameras and sensors that assess the highway ahead and help the vehicle to react early if drivers are heading into danger.

In May, EuroRap noted that the Road Safety Foundation's latest report claims 304 people in the UK are alive today as a result of improvements such as new signs being made to 15 roads.
