Poll finds 30% of motorists text while driving

Nissan Navara drivers may be among those who have admitted to texting while behind the wheel.

A new study conducted by road safety charity Brake and Direct Line found that nearly 30 per cent of motorists send messages while they are in control of their car.

Eight per cent claimed they text and drive at least once a week, which may be distressing news for other road users as it was suggested that separate research shows attempting to type at the wheel can make drivers 23 times more likely to crash.

Brake campaigns director Julie Townsend said: "People who text, use the web or social networking when driving are taking enormous risks with their own and other people's lives."

She added that such behaviour is "irresponsible", as well as illegal and "there should be no excuses".

In a bid to discourage the practice, the government introduced the THINK! road safety campaign in 2009, which was aimed at young drivers in particular.
