Pickup trucks 'most popular vehicle in US'

Vehicles like the Ford Ranger pickup truck remain popular in the US where green cars are less of a focus, according to one expert.

Motoring journalist Carlton Boyce described how the country is unlikely to ever be able to recover the title of the world's leading car manufacturer due to competition from Asia-Pacific nations.

He suggested the US is more focused on petrol power with many individuals opting to purchase SUVs or pickups rather than green vehicles.

"Places like Malaysia, Thailand and I think it was South Korea, they are investing quite heavily in green initiatives. The US just isn't really into that yet," Mr Boyce stated.

It was noted that the country is not only falling behind in the green car stakes, but has "reached saturation" in terms of car ownership.

In comparison, he noted that China has the most power in the manufacturing sector as it produces around 14 million vehicles per year.
