Nissan announces UK production

Nissan Navaras could soon be being produced in the UK following an announcement by the manufacturing company that they are to build the next version of the Nissan Qashqai in the country.

The president and chief executive officer of Nissan Motor Carlos Ghosn revealed the firm's plan at a meeting with the Prime Minister David Cameron.

Workers in Britain are set to design, engineer and build the vehicles, which will safeguard 6,000 jobs in the UK.

Speaking at 10 Downing Street, Mr Ghosn said: "The UK has been a cornerstone of Nissan manufacturing since 1986, with the Sunderland plant setting important benchmarks for quality and efficiency in Europe and around the world."

The move will see £192 million worth of investment in the country, with an additional £420 million spent on the Sunderland plant.

Last year, it was announced that the Nissan Leaf would also be manufactured at the north-eastern location.
