The Government has indicated that it is planning to drop the existing levels of alcohol limits when driving, to the equivalant of less than a pint of beer or a glass of wine.

The Transport Secretary, Lord Adonis, is expecting a review of the law that recommends dropping the legal limit from 80mg of alcohol of blood, down to 50mg.

He said he would take this report very seriously and has stated that he believes a strong case has been made to have the limit lowered.

There are also proposals to introduce a new law to tackle motorists who drive under the influence of drugs.

The Government believes that 65 death and 230 serious injuries could be prevented each year if the new laws were implimented.
