New dangerous driving law praised

Individuals who drive Toyota Hilux pickup vans may agree with one motoring group's welcoming of a new dangerous driving offence.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has announced its support for the Ministry of Justice's plan to include causing serious injury under the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill.

According to the organisation's head of road safety Kevin Clinton it is about time the rule was passed.

However, he added: "To ensure this new law works as intended, it will be absolutely crucial to ensure that it is applied consistently in terms of prosecution and sentencing."

Those found guilty of committing the offence in England and Wales could face up to five years in prison.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists also praised the new law, but its spokesperson Vince Yearley claimed the maximum jail term should relate to the offence not the consequences, "however awful".
