Leasing vans 'is more eco-friendly'

Individuals may be more inclined to lease Toyota Hilux pickups after hearing how rental vehicles are said to be more eco-friendly than private cars.

New research conducted by TRL on behalf of the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) revealed such cars and vans emit less carbon dioxide and other pollutants.

It was suggested this may be down to the fact rented modes of transport are often newer and better maintained than privately owned models.

On average, CO2 emissions from leased vehicles are 12 per cent lower, the study revealed.

BVRLA chief executive John Lewis commented: "It is now clearer than ever that car rental presents a cheaper, safer and more sustainable alternative to car ownership for millions of business and leisure motorists."

The body recently claimed encouraging individuals to invest in cars and vans that are environmentally-friendly is being hindered by he high cost of electric vehicles.
