IAM calls for 80mph motorway test

Toyota Hilux drivers may be in support of a new campaign being led by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

The organisation is hoping to see a pilot 80mph speed limit introduced on motorways, as the body believes the safety of allowing people to travel at such speeds needs to be verified.

IAM chief executive officer Simon Best said: "A detailed trial is needed to assess these risks though, and if they are shown to increase significantly, of course a better-enforced 70 limit may be a more appropriate system."

The campaign comes after the government announced in September that it is considering allowing the maximum speed to be raised.

Recent research from the Department for Transport (DfT) revealed more than half of all drivers already exceed the 70mph limit, while a fifth go faster than 80mph.

Elsewhere, the DfT recently published statistics relating to dangerous driving that showed 35,525 accidents were caused last year by illegal habits such as exceeding the speed limit.
