A row erupted yesterday after many Local Authorities were blamed for failing to ensure that principal roads were kept free of ice and snow.
The head of the Automobile Association, Mr Edmund King found himself falling victim to some of the worst gridlocked roads around Basingstoke in Hampshire. He accused Local Councils for not acting sooner and more thoroughly to treat ice bound routes.
In Reading, Berkshire more than 2000 drivers were trapped last night, and many commuters in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire abandoned their vehicles, spending the night in a major department store which opened its doors as an ad hoc emergency centre.
