Grit rationing continues

The Highways Agency and Local Authorities have agreed to a 25% cut in grit use last Friday, as the freezing weather conditions continue.

The Government's Transport Secretary, Lord Adonis, stated that further rationing of road salt was neccessary to make sure that the major roads were kept open for the duration of the cold spell.

The AA's Head of Road Policy, Paul Watters commented that this action means that only Motorways and Major trunk roads would be gritted and almost all other routes would go untreated, leading to more accidents.

Further problems were highlighted by a partial thaw, as many road surfaces are beginning to break up and deep potholes are appearing.

Whilst this may not cause as many problems for pickup truck drivers as owners of standard vehicles, all drivers were warned to keep alert to deteriorating conditions
