Ford: UK operation has a global role

Pickup truck leasing manufacturer Ford has reaffirmed the importance of the UK market to the international motoring giant.

Addressing an audience of businesses leaders at the Confederation of British Industry's Annual Lecture, Ford president Alan Mulally emphasised the UK's role as a major part of the company's structure.

"It has a global role and one that can grow in importance," he said.

"Ford in Britain can produce two million engines a year including the latest low-CO2 technology petrol engines from Ford Bridgend in Wales and highly-efficient diesel engines from Ford Dagenham in London.

"One-third of Ford cars globally are powered by engines manufactured and engineered in Britain."

Mr Mulally also reported on the progress of the company's ONE Ford strategy, which involves bringing out globally available models and so benefiting from economies of scale.

As part of this strategy, Ford recently announced the unveiling of the new Ranger pickup truck at the 2010 Australian International Motor Show this October, which will be available in 180 different markets across the globe, including the UK.
