Digital Radio challenge for the Auto Industry

The Society of Motoring Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have warned the government that while they support a switch over to Digital Radio, the motoring section remains a key concern.

Whilst drivers of pickup trucks have more sophisticated audio systems than ever before, with CD multichangers, mp3 compatability or connectivity becoming the standard in many vehicles, digital radios are uncommon, along with some 31 million other road users.

Ed Vaizey, the Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries has made it clear that he wishes to see that all new cars are fitted with digital radios by the end of 2013.

However, it is feared that the task of converting the vast amount of analogue radios currently in use by motorists could cost around £300 a vehicle
