Charity calls for zero tolerance on drink driving

Individuals driving Ford Ranger pickups this festive season may want to take one road safety charity's advice on staying sober behind the wheel.

A new survey conducted by Brake and Direct Line has revealed 29 per cent of young people are willing to drive after having a few drinks.

Meanwhile, 53 per cent would risk handling a car when potentially still over the limit the morning after a heavy night.

Julie Townsend, Brake campaigns director, said: "We all - young and old - have a responsibility to do what we can to prevent further drink drive deaths and injuries."

She suggested motorists should all pledge never to get behind the wheel if they have had even one glass of alcohol.

Brake also called for people to "speak up" if they notice a friend or loved one is considering driving after drinking.

The comments come after the charity recently welcomed a police crackdown on those who consume alcohol or take drugs before operating a car.
