Car maintenance checks 'vital before winter driving'

Carrying out car maintenance checks before setting off on a long journey in winter may be something Toyota Hilux drivers want to ensure they do.

In preparation for cold weather and freezing temperatures, Age UK has provided motorists with tips on the best way to avoid being stranded in snowy conditions.

"With nights getting longer and forecasts for a bitter winter, it is vital that motorists ensure that they can rely on their vehicles before venturing out on the roads," managing director of Age UK Enterprises Gordon Morris commented.

He recommended getting a garage to check oil, water and antifreeze levels in a vehicle, while having a battery assessed and tyre tread and pressure looked at was also advised.

Mr Morris noted that lights should all be in good working order and cleaned regularly to remove grime that may hinder their glow.

Another safety check drivers may want to undertake is having their brakes looked at, as head of AA Rescue Noel Keogh recently warned that those in a bad condition can prove to be extremely hazardous in icy conditions.
