News that one in three drivers known someone who has got behind the wheel or considered doing so without insurance may shock those leasing Nissan Navaras.

A study conducted by GEM Motoring Assist revealed that many individuals are looking for ways to cut corners during the recession and it appears car insurance may be a popular way of doing so.

David Williams, chief executive officer at the organisation, described the findings as alarming and claimed investing in a policy is "imperative".

"If you find yourself in an accident without insurance you will end up forking out a whole lot more money, not forgetting the penalties if you are caught," he added.

People who are caught driving without cover face a fine of up to £5,000 and between six and eight points on their licence.

According to information from Direct Gov, uninsured motorists create a financial burden of around £380 million each year on other drivers.
