Barclays to create 600 jobs in Glasgow

By Chris Malone

Barclays has taken another step towards providing the Scottish jobs market with 2,000 positions.

The banking group is using a Scottish Enterprise grant of £6.6 million to expand its presence in the country and has agreed to create a total of 2,000 jobs as part of the deal.

First minister Alex Salmond praised the firm's recent announcement that up to 600 new roles will be created in Glasgow.

He said the decision, which will see a global shared services hub created at the bank's Aurora site, shows the resilience and quality of Scotland's financial sector.

Mr Salmond said that the country has a long and proud reputation in the financial services sector, which provides 95,000 jobs nationwide.

"The biggest names in the industry continue to invest in Scotland despite tough competition from emerging markets and I am delighted that Barclays has chosen to expand its business in Glasgow with an additional 600 staff," he said.

In other news, Barclays is to say goodbye to chief executive John Varley, who will be replaced by Bob Diamond.
